PT. Visi Globalindo Data Utama predicts that the horticultural plantation sector will increase. This year 2018, the government is in a process for the developing a program called “Aksi Holtikultura 2018” to enhance the performance of horticultural plantation sector in Indonesia. Through the program, the Directorate General of Horticulture will focus on the improvement of production, added value, competitiveness, and export of horticultural products. This becomes a treatment to lessen the imports of horticultural products that currently are still quite high.

Based on data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), the national horticultural plantation sector increased by 8.51% in the second quarter of 2018, or 2.98 points higher if compared to the same period of 2017. For this year 2018, some of the horticultural products that have contributed contribution to the export market are mangosteen and zalacca (exported to China), mangoes ( exported to Australia) and several other primary fruits like orange and durian.

Furthermore, the government also quickens the planned realisation of self-sufficiency program for garlic and several other crops, from the year 2033 to become the next year 2019, despite obstacles in meeting adequate supply of seeds. Based on the program, production of garlic in 2018 is targeted to reach 105,484 tons. Meanwhile, production of onion is targeted to reach 1.6 million tons, red chilli pepper 1.2 million tons, and cayenne pepper 962,329 tons.
